I told myself I would only read a few chapters one night, and somehow found myself up at midnight, still reading. The characters I fell in love with in the first novel are given more page-time in this sequel, and Sophie's adventures take a darker, more emotional turn. While I highly enjoyed KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES, Messenger surprised me with how incredible EXILE turned out to be. If you are looking for a fun and creative middle-grade series that is filled with surprises and fabulous characters, then you need to check out these books.

HIGHLIGHTS: I love how important family and friendship is in this series. While Sophie relies heavily on herself, she also leans on her friends (especially Dex and Keefe) and family (the fabulous Grady and Edaline) when she needs some extra support. I even enjoyed Sophie's struggles with her abilities in this novel, and how she never let that hold her back. The new details Messenger included about Sophie's fascinating world were fantastic. While reading, I never knew what to expect from this story, so I was very surprised by certain moments.

LOWLIGHTS: I didn't make note of any lowlights while reading, so I think it's safe to say that I highly enjoyed this entire story. I was a bit bothered by Fitz's moody attitude, but I understand why he acted the way he did.

This is the third time I have read this book. I don't know why I did not review it before now. I reread every book when a new book is published. Anyway, Sophie and Keefe are on an adventure to save a very important character (no spoilers), and we are introduced to an important new friend nicknamed Glitter butt. I truly think these books are better than the Harry Potter series, which I loved rereading multiple times. You need to read this series.
So I really liked book one of this series and didn’t even want to wait for the paper version, but ordered the digital. And normally I finish a digital book in a few hours. This one took me over a week. Yes there were extenuating circumstances, but overall, this book got a little lost in the mystery and forgot why the first book was so good.
The first book introduced us to Sophie, a changling elf raised by humans then transported to the land of Elves because “she is the chosen one” or lost one...and a bit of a Mary Sue able to do All the talents, except potions (Alchemy) taught by a Snape like woman who thinks Sophie is the pits.
But book one was fun, exasperating, thrill ride of an adventure. Especially for a tween fantasy novel with magic and a bit of tween drama, (love interests and all), the first book was a fun middle grade fantasy that made me want to read more.
Book two doubled down on mystery, and frequently left description or even logic aside in favor of “the chosen one is broken, let’s fix her”. Bits of convenient memories and flashbacks appear throughout the book when it would have made more sense to have Sophie be at school and actually work through things. The entire book takes place a few weeks after book 1 left off and possibly only covers a month or two. And half the time Sophie is sleeping or being treated for one medical crisis or another.
It’s not a bad book, and still is interesting, but it’s only book two and the pace has slowed down, getting bogged in mystery and rarely describing events. Things happen because a note is left, and someone Needs the chosen one to manifest new powers, not because they necessarily make sense. But, it is a fun, clean read, and appropriate for readers in 3-7th grade. Evil is still cloaked figures, and hard to describe, but some resolution to if the Black Swan a good group or not is achieved. Sophie still has several love interests, but the pain of being in Elf land and losing her only family is gone. Overall I’m going to continue reading the series, but it’s a long one, so probably won’t recommend to our school library.
