Selected Writings Penguin Classics Meister Eckhart Oliver Davies 9780140433432 Books

A fine selection of Meister Eckhart's writings, but not for the faint of heart. This is solid Christian stuff, about God, father, son and holy spirit, and about the symbols of the faith and its spiritual insights into the relation of man and God. Unless you have a pretty good idea about the tradition of the Christian faith you will quickly give up, but for those who persist, there are wonders here. He talks about the notion of God as a trinity of action not a dualism. I think of the 3 sided rotary Mazda engine - not the up and down, either/or, dualism, of the conventional engine!
We know that God is one in trinity of persons, and the world is his creation/creatures. Eckhart talks much about the One in All in a lively way so that one, paradoxically, may see one in all. And this is but one his brilliant paradoxes which he tells us how to resolve.

Selected Writings Penguin Classics Meister Eckhart Oliver Davies 9780140433432 Books Reviews

Very impressive introduction so do not skip it. Well worth your time. The sermons facilitate meditation if you are patient.
will make you think
Reading Eckhart is very current about how many feel now about God. Insights, thoughts, suggestions. I wanted to talk back and did; disagreeing in places, and that improves my thinking, stimulated by a profound thinker.
The book is very interesting way of thinking about God. However, it is dragged out in language and becomes very dry reading after a while. It has great insight as to who we are in God and how we should retain our relationship with him.
This is a review of only the edition of this book, not the hard copy, although some observations may apply to both.

As I say in the title, almost $9 is fairly pricy for a edition which has a good, but not great selection of Meister Eckhard's works. I'm comparing this primarily to the Bernard McGinn / O'C. Walshe edition "The Complete Mystical Works of Meister Eckhart" which has all of Eckhart's 100 and more German sermons plus four treatises (this edition has three, all of which are in McGinn). This edition has only 29 of the German sermons and four Latin sermons.

The McGinn volume is relatively pricy, but it is also the only volume with all available German sermons. I cannot speak for the quality of the translation from the Middle High German, but the one done by O'C Walshe is considered to be the best by McGinn, which he has further imporved upon. I will not concern myself with the value of Eckhart's work, because if you are considering this book, you already know that.

Of course, that does not take into account the value of any edition over a hard copy. As editions go, this one, like most others I've seen of Penguin editions is pretty good, but not the best. It does not have an active Table of Contents to all the sermons. The bibliography is good, except that most of the references are to books and papers in German. If you can read German, then this is a really good thing.

If all you want is a taste of Eckhart, this is a very good choice, as it has his important series of first four sermons in Middle High German, which form a series laying out many of his theological ideas.
Excellent overview of Eckhart's work, with little commentary by the translator. This work will appeal to persons interested in nonduality generally, and who appreciate Christian theology as influenced by NeoPlatonism, as well as persons interested in exploring nonduality in Christian theology in relationship to nonduality in other traditions, especially Buddhism and Advaita. One who disdains what her or see sees as shallowness in Christian thought (a mindset common) can be surprised in work like Eckhart's, thought that rivals the most indepth teachings of any tradition, West or East. Likewise, Eckhart here offers a path from the '"world" back into "it" in a transformed way, much like the Buddhist path of leaving to return. Eckhart offers no spiritualized transcendence of matter and life-here-now, yet, he guides into a way free of immersement in identity with time and place, as well as free of identity with the provisional self.
Still not finished. As good as it is, I can only read a chapter or two before needing a rest. Meister Eckhart seems to have an extremely deep understanding of the spiritual life. I keep wondering if he just reads this way or if he was not completely open about himself. In other worlds, is he a product of the university or of God? My belief in the latter keeps me reading. By the way, I don't think the translator really understands him (include me in that group) but I think very few would. Wish the author was alive today so I could ask some questions...
